Stephen Topple

Stephen Topple is a Senior lecturer in accounting at UTS. He is a graduate of NSWIT, now UTS, with a Diploma of Technology (Commerce) and a Bachelor of Business and has a Master of Commerce (Hons) from the University of NSW and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Sydney. He is a qualified accountant being a Fellow of CPA Australia and a chartered accountant.

Before commencing an academic career he had gained extensive accounting experience in industry. He had completed his undergraduate studies part-time while working in industry. His teaching and research interests concern the role accounting and auditing in governance with his teaching expertise being in financial accounting, assurance, auditing and the use of accounting information by management. At UTS he has taught and been coordinating examiner for graduate and undergraduate subjects in these areas. Currently his portfolio of responsibilities at UTS includes being Director of Undergraduate Business Courses, Coordinator of the Graduate Conversion Course in Accounting, coordinator of the School of Accounting's assurance and auditing subjects.

The perspective of his research is the economics of auditing and accounting. A particular research interest is audit firm merger and accounting for business combination. His research also encompasses the impact of standards and regulation on accounting and auditing.

He has held senior academic administrative positions in the Faculty of Business at UTS having served as that Faculty's Sub Dean and Director of the Undergraduate Programs, and the alternative Head of School of Accounting. He has served on various university boards including the university's Academic Board and is presently on Academic Board and the Faculty Board in Business.
