In addition to the research undertaken by its academic staff, the School of Leisure, Sport & Tourism is involved in specialised research areas.

Australian Centre for Event Management

The mission of the Australian Centre for Event Management (ACEM) is to develop and support industry best practice in event management, and to maximise the economic, social and cultural benefits that flow to the Australian community through the conduct of events. Its core activities include curriculum development of event courses, the delivery of continuing education programs for the event industry, and research and consultancy services associated with the planning, conduct and evaluation of events. ACEM publishes and distributes resources associated with the management of events, and maintains a resource centre housing documentation and research in this area. Through its activities, ACEM seeks to position Australia as a centre of excellence in the broad area of event management.

Cooperative Research Centre in Sustainable Tourism

UTS is a partner in the national Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC). Launched in 1997 and awarded a new 7-year term in 2003, STCRC Tourism involves sixteen universities across all States and Territories, and eighteen tourism industry partners. The industry partners in New South Wales are the Department of Environment and Conservation (Parks Service Division) the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation (Tourism NSW)and the Tourism and Transport Forum. The mission of the STCRC is to develop and manage intellectual property to deliver innovation to business, community and government enhancing the environmental, economic and social sustainability of tourism. See the School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism's Annual Report for STCRC Tourism projects .

Sport Knowledge Australia (SKA)

Australia's international reputation for sporting excellence derives from a strong sports-oriented culture complemented by world-class capacities in sports science, sports coaching, and sports management.

In April 2004, the consortium of the University of Sydney (USyd), University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) won the right from the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) to establish the $7.8m Sport Knowledge Australia, based at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush.

Sports Science and Management is an important and growing knowledge industry. No individual Australian institution comprehensively provides education, research and management expertise and knowledge across the entire sector. SKA aims to harness this expertise within Australia and export it to the world. SKA builds on existing and creates new markets in Australia, North and South America, Europe and Asia.

Australian Centre for Olympic Studies

The School hosts the Australian Centre for Olympic Studies (ACOS), which was established at UTS in 2004 to provide a national focus for Olympic studies and continue the work of three state Centres based respectively at the Universities of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. With the closure of the UNSW Centre in 2004, ACOS provided a new home for the former centre’s archives and library. Dr. Richard Cashman, the former Director of the UNSW centre, joined UTS as Adjunct Professor and Associate Director of the new centre.

UTS has a long history of involvement in Olympic studies through teaching, research and community service and is well placed to examine Olympic studies in their broadest sense: to consider issues relating to the Olympic Games; to research the Paralympic Games and other major sporting events; and to focus on 'sport for all' which is advocated by the Olympic movement. UTS recognises that it is important to coordinate, enhance and publicise research on the Olympic Games in a wide range of areas. Accordingly, ACOS seeks to coordinate and publicise relevant university research, teaching and community service. By gathering information about the organisation of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and other major international sporting events, ACOS has developed a research data base to assist in the organisation of similar future events.

The School hosts the Secretariat of the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) leading up to the 5th World Conference on Women and Sport to be held in Sydney in 2010
