Overview of the Facilities of the Human Performance Centre

The Human Performance Centre consists of three separate teaching and testing laboratories.  We have a dedicated Physiology Testing Laboratory, a Biomechanics Laboratory and a new large Teaching Laboratory.  Our labs contain the equipment for exercise testing, metabolic measurements, cardiovascular measurements, strength evaluation, kinematic analysis, force evaluation, electromyography, body composition and biochemical analysis of body tissue and fluids. 

The Human Performance Centre (HPC) at UTS has been involved in a variety of applied and clinical research topics in the area of exercise and sport science.  The focus of research from the HPC is on the limitations of human performance in both exercise and health.  We conduct both applied and clinical studies in these areas with projects that examine how to optimise athletic performance and clinical investigations in areas of aging, musculo-skeletal injury and the treatment and prevention of disease.  We also have strong collaborative links with the Sydney Academy of Sport.

We offer postgraduate programs (Doctoral and Masters Level) in exercise and sport science and biomechanics.  One of the unique aspects of our graduate programs is the “hands on” experience the students gain during their study.  We encourage our postgraduate students to participate in the project development, data collection and analysis, and writing of the research findings.  We take pride in the achievements of our students and follow their accomplishments with a sense of satisfaction.

Mr Rob Bower BEd (PE), MSc

Research Interests: biomechanics; sports coaching; elderly women and gait; sporting equipment design; motion analysis.

Dr Mark Watsford BA (HMS), MA

Research Interests: The effects of respiratory muscle training; ergogenic aids in sport; musculotendinous stiffness and injury risk; acupuncture and recovery from exercise; exercise for the older population; physical activity interventions for the general population and the bioenergetics of team sport performance.

The Human Performance Centre contains equipment for:

Physiological assessment

  • Assessment of oxygen consumption using a variety of different exercise modalities including walking, running, cycling, rowing and swimming
  • Blood chemistry profiling
  • Strength evaluation
  • Training load assessment and prescription
  • Respiratory muscle function
  • Cardiac assessment of central blood pressure/sphygmographic tonometry
  • Team sport specific assessment using a non-motorised treadmill
  • Time-motion analysis using GPS and other tracking technologies

Biomechanical assessment

  • 3 dimensional motion analysis
  • 3 dimensional measurement of ground reaction forces
  • Musculotendinous stiffness
  • Crank force assessment during cycling
  • Electromyography assessment

Performance augmentation

A variety of training programs can be integrated by the staff to improve either cardiovascular or strength, with novel training modalities including:

  • Whole body vibration
  • Respiratory muscle training
  • Plyometrics
  • Sport-specific running
  • Flexibility
