The School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism offers a number of courses requiring students to undertake professional internships. These industry placements have mutual benefits to both your organisation and to the student as they:
- provide your organisation with an energetic person who has relevant up-to-date skills and knowledge, and who is eager to learn, develop new skills, and present a professional product.
- range in length from a few days to 400 hours.
- can be undertaken in a solid block, eg. two weeks full-time, on a part-time basis, eg. one day per week for three months, or a combination of both.
- may take place at any time of the year, depending on the industry partner's needs, the type of placement and the student's academic commitments.
- require that you give support, supervision, and feedback to the student.
- provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills and gain workplace experience.
- provide UTS with feedback to evaluate the effectiveness and relevance of course material and curricula.
Short-term Placements (up to 80 hours)
Short-term placements involve first year students in leisure management, sport and exercise management, and human movement studies.
They provide students with the opportunity to gain knowledge of processes involved in designing, promoting, implementing, and evaluating programs relating to a physical activity, sport or leisure program, or aspect of it. For example, students may:
- plan, publicise, implement and evaluate a teen holiday tennis camp
- design and implement a health and fitness program for a fitness centre
- develop a program for an outdoor recreation camp
- program and implement recreation activities for a local council
- produce an activity program for a museum
- coordinate a community festival
Long-term Placements (180 hours)
Long-term placements provide students with a chance to apply and further develop research, management, and administration skills. These programs commence from January each year and must be completed by the end of October. For example, students may:
- coordinate a major sports event
- develop a marketing plan and sponsorship proposal
- undertake a market feasibility project for introducion of a new product
- research, design and produce the publication of an operations manual for staff
- organise a major conference
