What is co-operative education?

Co-operative education is a joint venture between employers and educators in the preparation of graduates for employment and community responsibilities. UTS is a world leader in co-operative education, with more students undertaking co-op courses than any other Australian university. Indeed, this strong UTS commitment has succeeded in attracting half of Australia's co-operative students and attracts tuition-paying students from Asia and other parts of the world. It also strengthens the close links between UTS and industry, giving an opportunity for industry to be directly involved in tertiary education.

The Bachelor of Accounting program is highly regarded by business leaders as an extremely relevant course that produces outstanding graduates. It is a fine example of the best features of co-operative education.

Professor Tony Blake, Vice-Chancellor, UTS (1996-2002)
Executive Vice-President, World Association for Co-operative Education`

The Bachelor of Accounting is a co-operative education program, being a three-way partnership between the sponsor organisations, UTS and the students. Each of these partners makes special contributions to the course and derives special benefits from their participation:

  • The sponsor organisations are involved in interviewing and selecting the best students to join the program; they provide carefully structured training and personal supervision during the Internships; they participate in the development of the course through a number of advisory committees; and they contribute the sponsorship funds to finance student scholarships and administration of the program. Sponsor organisations benefit from the work performed by students during their industrial training and by having the chance to recruit the finest graduates possible.

  • The students benefit firstly through the Bachelor of Accounting scholarship, which financially supports them during the program; students also benefit from the valuable work training gained while still finishing their degree in three years; successful students are assured of excellent career prospects upon graduation. In return, Bachelor of Accounting students undertake a heavier workload than other students, and are expected to participate fully in all aspects of the program.

  • The University and the School of Accounting are proud to be associated with this program, which addresses a critical shortage of top calibre graduate accountants. The Office of Co-operative Education within the School of Accounting was established specifically to administer and develop the Bachelor of Accounting program.

The Bachelor of Accounting program seeks to fulfill the UTS mission to provide higher education for professional practice which anticipates and responds to community needs and the effects of social and technological change.
