Why Accounting?

Business employers badly need skilled accounting graduates. There is a real shortage. What is in demand are not just graduates with the technical accounting skills, but graduates who also have outstanding people skills.

Why? Because this is the set of skills required to guide Australian enterprise through an environment of constant change and challenge. A background in accounting is seen by many employers as a prerequisite to becoming a business manager; it is a springboard to great careers far beyond the limits of traditional accounting practice.

The sponsoring employers involved in the BAcc program want accounting graduates who understand their business and what drives performance. These graduates also need to be able to work with all parts of the business, and to think strategically in adding value rather than just keeping score. Read some of the success stories of our BAcc graduates over the years.

You may not realise how different accounting roles today are from the stereotypical image of accountants as "bean counters" or "number crunchers".  You may also not realise how financially rewarding a career in accounting can be. And you may like to read some of the insights gained by our students into accounting roles and accounting as a career.

The emphasis during the Bachelor of Accounting course is on accounting study and work experience, and the focus of our graduates and sponsors is accounting-based careers. But you get to study much more than just accounting.

Please note that the Bachelor of Accounting is not the main undergraduate accounting course at UTS.
