The key theme of the Summit is Meeting the Challenge of Sustainable Development: How do public and corporate events engage with the global agenda?
The Summit will also deal with more general themes associated with the further professionalisation of the Australian and International events industry (e.g. managing event businesses, event management technology). The Summit's programme is designed to meet the needs of both public and corporate event practitioners as well as researchers.

ACEM is making the 2009 Summit carbon neutral, working with the Carbon Reduction Institute to measure, reduce and offset the Summit's carbon emissions.
The Summit provides an excellent opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with leaders in the Australian and international event industry and established researchers in the field.

Carbon offset project: The Rudd government ratified the Kyoto Protocol, which binds Australia to an emissions cap for each year starting from 2008. Whilst this action shows genuine commitment to solving climate change, one of the unfortunate (though avoidable consequences) was that current purchases of green power, and offset purchases from Australian projects that are post 2008 are non additional, and do not lead to the reduction of greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. This is because the greenhouse savings from these activities are accounted for and used at a government level to help meter compliance to Kyoto – and therefore cannot be used by a business or individual as a ‘carbon offset.’
This is why the Summit is supporting the Karnataka Renewable Energy project (PDF 176.39KB). When an individual or business purchases a credit from this project, they are the only party claiming ownership of the greenhouse reduction. The project also improves local health outcomes, provides wealth and local employment opportunities and has funded a number of community projects including a local ambulance service and restorations to local temples.
