Conference report by Johnny Allen

The Third International Event Research Conference hosted by the Australian Centre for Event Management at the University of Technology concluded in Sydney on 14 July on the theme The Impacts of Events: Triple Bottom Line Evaluation and Event Legacies.  The conference brought together practicing event managers and academic researchers from as far afield as the US, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Finland, India and South Africa, as well as from all Australian states and New Zealand, to provide a global overview of event management research and training.

Keynote presentations were given by Dr Leo Jago from the CRC for Sustainable Tourism on moves to establish a common methodology for evaluating events, and by Ian Macfarlane from Tourism Australia on the role of events in destination marketing. Other presentations on event impacts and management were given by Jon Hutchison from the Sydney Convention and Visitors Bureau, Michael O’Sullivan from the NSW Department of State and Regional Development, Jan Willett from the NSW Premier’s Department and Annabelle Pegrum from the National Capital Development Authority.

Dr Joe Jeff Goldblatt CSEP, founder of the International Special Events Society and Dean of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Temple University in the US, presented an exploratory study on growing demand levels for an Event Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK).

Prof Chris Kemp, the leading British researcher on crowd safety at events, provided an insightful presentation and workshop on safety measures for rock events being developed in response to several recent fatalities at concerts in the UK and Europe.

Andrew Walsh, Producer of Ceremonies for the Athens Olympic Games and Director of Ceremonies for the 2003 Rugby World Cup and for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, provided a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the creation of iconic events for a world audience.

IOC Member Kevan Gosper AO, freshly returned form the IOC Meeting in Singapore to announce London as the host city for the 2012 Olympics, provided a first hand account of the momentous events of the previous week at the conference dinner at WatersEdge Restaurant.

In addition to the keynote speakers, some 45 academics and industry representatives presented research reports and workshops on a variety of aspects of event management topics.

Two associated events, an Event Education and Research Network Australia Symposium and a Workshop on Setting an Agenda for Disability and Tourism Research, added an additional dimension to the Conference.

Said Conference Convenor Johnny Allen “When we held our first conference in 2000 event research was really in its infancy. This conference demonstrates that the field has matured, and become truly global in its reach and significance."

The next Conference will be hosted by Southern Cross University in 2007
