School of Accounting Profile

The objective of the Faculty of Business is to enhance professional practice in its various fields of study, and to create, apply, and extend knowledge for the benefit of the community. These aims are achieved through a range of courses offered in a variety of formats to students from a diversity of backgrounds. These courses interact closely with the professions, with government and community organisations and, through innovative, relevant and continuing education, anticipate and meet the needs of the Faculty's various clients and stakeholders.

The School of Accounting makes a major contribution to these endeavors, particularly in the range and quality of its undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The largest single program in which the School is involved is the Bachelor of Business, where it has particular responsibility for the conduct of the Accounting major. The School is also responsible for the teaching of introductory financial and management accounting to all students in all majors in the Bachelor of Business degree. Further, the School is responsible for the innovative Bachelor of Accounting degree based on a co-operative education program, where sponsorship of the students enrolled in the program is provided by organisations from a wide variety of institutions spanning both the public and private sectors. Students who complete the Accounting major in the Bachelor of Business, or who complete the Bachelor of Accounting degree, meet the academic requirements for membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and CPA Australia.

The School also has responsibility for a number of postgraduate programs, including doctoral studies in Accounting. This responsibility covers the provision of teaching in the accounting and business systems areas in the Faculty of Master of Business Administration and Graduate Diploma in Administration programs and in a number of postgraduate programs for other Schools. In conjunction with the School of Finance and Economics, the School of Accounting is closely involved with the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and the Master of Business in Accounting and Finance. These courses are designed for further studies in the fields of accounting, finance and financial management. The Master of Business in Accounting is designed to incorporate those compulsory technical modules of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, which can be taken as electives. Students who are ineligible for Professional Year programs of The Institute can be admitted to the Master of Business in Accounting, taking subjects offered by the School of Accounting as their electives instead of the Institute's compulsory technical modules.

In addition, the School offers an MBA in Professional Accounting to non-accounting graduates and selected non-graduates who wish to enhance their positions of responsibility in the accounting profession and in general management. The program is accredited by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia as meeting the academic requirements for membership. This MBA program is offered with advanced standing for graduates who have successfully completed their Professional Year program.

The School also offers a Graduate Conversion Course in Accounting which enables participants with non-accounting degrees to meet the entry requirements of the professional accounting bodies.
